Car or Vanpool

Pool Your Resources

Join campus employees and students who are enjoying the benefits of carpooling. UC Berkeley offers carpoolers numerous incentives to team up and share the costs of driving. Benefits include:

  • Waiver of annual transportation fee
  • Discounts on parking permits
  • Access to parking spaces reserved for carpoolers
  • Shared vehicle expenses
  • Less traffic congestion and reduced pollutants
  • Use of carpool lanes

Purchase Information

To be eligible, you must be a current UC Berkeley student, member of staff or faculty member. For pricing and lot access information on both carpool permits and dispensing machine tickets (DMTs), see our Parking Permit List. To apply, review and follow the steps outlined in the Carpool Application Process.

Using a Carpool Permit

The Carpool Program allows individuals to purchase a carpool permit with the level of lot access to which they are entitled (C, F, or S lots). Two carpool permits must be displayed in a vehicle to be considered a carpool, and any two or more carpool permit holders traveling together become a carpool with parking access at the highest level of carpool permit displayed. Students and employees may carpool together.

If you cannot carpool on a given day, you may display your individual carpool permit along with a daily dispensing machine ticket (DMT) from one of the machines in the lot. Parking as an individual is limited to spaces determined by the level of the carpool permit issued.

Reserved Carpool Parking

Reserved carpool parking spaces are available throughout the campus. Accessible on weekdays until 9:00am, these reserved spaces are open to all carpoolers on a first-come first served basis, and not assigned to specific carpool groups. See the campus parking map for carpool space locations.

Finding a Carpool Partner

You can find potential carpool partners through the regional ride matching system. Sign up for the 511 Ridematch service, or call 511.

Vanpooling for Larger Groups

For longer distances of 20 miles or more, a vanpool is a comfortable, economical way to travel. A vanpool is operated by a group of seven or more UC employees who originate from the same area. Vanpoolers who are UC employees with an Employee ID card are eligible for the program, and for benefits including discounted parking and the Guaranteed Ride Home program, provided by the Congestion Management Agency.

Vanpools traveling to UC Berkeley are owner/operated and not sponsored by P&T. For more information on vanpools in your area visit 511.org or call 511.
